adina glickstein has never seen sailor moon. this is a fan video illustrating some foggy notion of what sailor moon is (or should be) about, informed by a general knowledge of the series absorbed through the cultural zeitgeist and a free-associative array of maritime imagery and metaphors. all these lines of thought are animated by a meditation on digital circulation: the movement of knowledge online, economies of knowing looks, referential easter-eggs, and distributed communities linked by bonds of shared fandom.
secrecy, too, appears in this work as knowledge’s counterpoint: samples that weren’t meant to circulate online still manage to find their way in here (sorry, terre thaemlitz, please don’t send me a cease-and-desist letter), transformed in a technological game of telephone. sources sampled range from thievery corporation to dj sprinkles, field recordings and beats that have lived, unnamed, in the artist’s voice memos app for so long that their original sources have receded into digital dust. the final video results from an initial live mix and repeated re-recording of this found material, amounting to a vague accretion that might feel a little bit like sailor moon.
